Fire Code Closure to Happy Ending

There was a new fire prevention inspector in town and he didn’t like what he saw. The addiction treatment centre was provided plenty of warning but couldn’t make the necessary changes. It had no money the required changes were substantial. After over twenty years of operations, the facility was shut down, eleven employees were laid off and a major treatment centre ceased operations. This was 2009.

Enter Longview Services Inc.

We worked with the fire department, liaised with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and listened to the charity.

Plans were drawn up, a building permit was issued and a public tender commenced. Construction lasted for almost three months. The facility reopened, staff returned and the process of admitting individuals began. The facility was much safer now and better suited the charity’s operations. Also, the small town in which this facility is located felt revitalized. Many people attended the reopening. And most important of all, the 300 plus men every year who receive treatment at this residential property had hope, as did their families.

This was a happy ending, a very happy ending. This is why we do what we do. We love making a difference for good.

Grant Writing Services for Nonprofit Organizations

Longview Services specializes in analyzing properties, listing their deficiencies (in terms of fire, building or Health and Safety violations, etc.) and communicating those needs to funders who want to help. Our involvement also provides needed assurances to the granting bodies that the planned upgrades will be done correctly, according to code and with a very high standard of quality.  We know how to write compelling grant requests and the millions we have raised for Ontario charities from a variety of sources is the proof.

It has been our experience that there are significant funds available to do work but most small and medium sized charities don’t know how to open the tap, so to speak. This is unfortunate since the charities are uniquely situated to use outside funds to improve the value of the physical assets.  The one charity which Longview has worked with the longest has seen a nine million dollar increase to the value of their properties, with the vast majority of the increase not coming from internal funds.
We have successfully helped charities obtain funds from the following sources:
  • Natural Resources Canada
  • Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
  • Trillium Foundation
  • LHINs
  • Private Foundations
Let us help your organization raise funds, renovate your facilities and reduce your energy consumption!

Non Profit Government Funding - Ontario Charities

Small and medium sized charities simply didn’t have the resources to hire property and project management professionals. Many of them owned or leased impressive facilities but only had cleaners to maintain them - not people skilled in improving the space over time.

Many small and medium sized charities didn’t have grant writing professionals either; and even if they did, they often didn’t know anything about buildings or how to raise substantial funds to renew them.

Longview Services Inc. helps client charities RAISE money, RENOVATE their facilities and REDUCE their energy use with minimal effort and cost.

How to Get Funding for a Non Profit Organization

What Is a Grant?

Using the words of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, a grant is “a financial donation given to support a person, organization, project, or program.”  It is typically awarded to a nonprofit organization from a foundation, corporation, or governmental agency.

Grants are typically awarded to a nonprofit organization for a distinct program or purpose.  A grantmaker generally focuses its giving on:

A specific population (such as children or organizations in Maryland)
Certain types of nonprofits (such as churches or environmental groups)
Particular types of support (such as program development or funding for equipment).

How to Prepare Your Organization and Get Government Grants

Many people think that finding money is the first step in starting a nonprofit.  But there’s a lot more to raising money than just having a good idea.  Since nonprofits and foundations exist in order to benefit the public, there must be a need for your organization and its work in the community.  After you’ve established that there is a need for your project, you also have to convince donors and funders that your organization has the ability to carry out what it says it wants to do!  Here are some of the most important things to consider:

  •     Clear mission and vision, goals, and objectives
  •     Committed board members
  •     Capable management, staff, and volunteers
  •     Legal standing to do business in your community
  •     Appropriate tax status
  •     Accounting systems
  •     Programs that are vital to the well-being of the community
  •     Fundraising plan, which seeks support from many different sources
  •     Facilities, equipment, and maintenance.
